چکیده
OBJECTIVE To investigate the characteristic of distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) amplitude, SNR and noise in preterm newborns. METHOD DPAOEs at the 2f1-f2 frequency were recorded from 59 ears of 31 preterm newborns and 35 ears of 19 healthy fullterm newborns in response to equilevel primary tones at postnatal 3 days to 1 week. Detailed test included the recording of DPAOEs, SNR and noise. RESULT The average DPOAE audiogram of preterm newborns illustrating the frequency response of these emissions demonstrated a maximum at 1,587 Hz and a minimum around 4,000 Hz. The DPOAE response amplitude of preterm newborn was lower than that of fullterm in every frequency(P < 0.05). The SNR was higher at 4,000 Hz than that at low frequency, but was lower at 1000 Hz than that at high frequency. At 4,000, 3,175, 1,587, 1,260 and 1,000 Hz, the SNR of preterm were lower thad fullterm(P < 0.05). The noise was higher at low frequency than that at high frequency. CONCLUSION The characteristics of DPOAE in preterm newborn are different from fullterm newborn. These differences may indicate immaturity in cochlear function. Outer hair cell function are hypothesized sources of this immaturity, although some contribution from the immature middle ear and outer ear cannot be ruled out.

Transient Evoked and Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions in a Group of Neonates
Introduction The most commonly used method in neonatal hearing screening programs is transient evoked otoacoustic emissions in the first stage of the process. There are few studies comparing transient evoked otoacoustic emissions with distortion product, but some authors have investigated the issue. Objective To correlate the results of transient evoked and distortion product otoacoustic emissi...
متن کاملThe E ect of Amplitude Modulated Contralateral Signals on Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions
Contralateral stimulation of the auditory system causes changes in levels of otoacoustic emissions. The main objective of this study was to determine the changes in the level of distortion product otoacoustic emissions for contralaterally presented unmodulated broad-band noise, or amplitude modulated broad-band noise. Two types of modulating signal were used in the investigations (sine or recta...

PURPOSE To present a case study in order to alert clinicians to the possibility of occurrence of intermodulation distortion during otoacoustic emissions testing that arises from the cavity formed by the external auditory meatus and tympanic membrane rather than from the inner ear, compromising the reliability and validity of otoacoustic emissions testing. متن کاملSpontaneous otoacoustic emissions in neonates and effect of contralateral white noise stimulation.
Neonates younger than the age of 12 weeks (10 full-term, 20 preterm) had an audiological assessment consisting of brainstem audiometry, tympanometry, transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions, and spontaneous otoacoustic emissions with contralateral white noise stimulation. Results from brainstem audiometry, tympanometry, and transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions suggested normal middle ear f...
